When to Book Your Session.

A straight answer on booking timing: why convocation weeks fill first, when Guelph’s fall colour peaks, why golden-hour slots go before everything else, and what actually happens if your first-choice date is gone.

The honest answer: earlier than you think.

Session timing is simple supply and demand. Everyone graduates in the same few weeks, everyone wants the same soft evening light, and the campus only has so many golden hours in a season. None of this is a reason to panic; it is just a reason to book the moment you know your date instead of the week before it.

A convocation season, at speed:

Convocation weeks fill first.

The weeks around convocation are the busiest of our year, and they fill from the best slots outward: evenings first, weekends second, everything else after. As a working rule, book four to eight weeks ahead for a convocation-season session, and earlier still if your date is fixed by out-of-town family or a lease ending.

Booking early costs you nothing but the $50 deposit, and it buys you the two things that cannot be added later: your first-choice date and your first-choice light.

The fall colour window.

Guelph puts on a short, spectacular show every fall. The colour along Alumni Walk, around Johnston Hall, and through the Arboretum peaks in mid to late October, and it does not wait for anyone’s schedule. Those few weeks are the single most requested stretch of our calendar, because they overlap fall convocation and peak colour at once. If a red-and-gold campus is the picture in your head, an October date is the first thing to lock in.

Golden hour goes first.

Within any single day, the last stretch before sunset books first, every time. It is the light that makes limestone glow and gowns look expensive, and there is exactly one of it per day. Premium bookings get golden-hour priority, which is worth knowing if the light matters to you as much as the date. Midday sessions still work beautifully (we know where the good shade lives), but the soft-light slots are the scarce resource on this whole page.

A simple booking timeline.

  • The moment you know your date: book it. The $50 deposit secures the session and the rest can be decided later.
  • Six or more weeks out: you are choosing between good options, including golden hour.
  • Two to three weeks out, in peak season: dates are usually still findable, but expect compromises on time of day.
  • Last minute: message us anyway. Weekday mornings hide surprising availability, and the campus is quieter then too.

If your date is gone.

It happens every convocation season, and it is rarely the end of the story. First, we will offer the nearest open slot, often a weekday evening within a few days of your first choice, when the campus is calmer and the light is identical. The ceremony is one day; the campus, the gown, and the people are not.

Second, ask to be on the cancellation list for your first-choice date. Deposits are non-refundable but plans still shift, and when a slot frees up it goes to the list before it goes back on the calendar.

And remember that a session does not have to touch convocation week at all. Some of the best galleries we deliver come from quiet dates a month later: same campus, same gown, none of the crowds.

Once the deposit is down, the pressure is off. We plan the locations with you (Johnston Hall, the Portico, the Gryphon statue, the Arboretum, or wherever your years actually happened), keep an eye on the weather, and confirm the details as the day approaches. After the session, your sneak peek arrives within 48 hours and the full edited gallery lands within 7 days, which means the photos are usually ready before the out-of-town family has even flown home.
